Celebrating Baby!
Hope everyone had a great, long weekend celebrating Memorial Day. We packed up the camper and headed north to one of our favorite weekend getaway locations deep in Ohio's Amish country. Such a beautiful area, a unique culture, and the food... we. ate. so. much. It was crazy. We didn't even bring anything elaborate, but it was sneaking the Amish goodies that did us in.
First stop (and some trips multiple stops) was to the best bakery for apple fritters, cinnamon twists, and glazed donuts. Melt in your mouth, I'm tellin' ya. They were still warm when we got there at 7:30am. Later at another stop, an older Amish woman had a table set up with her crafts, some homemade candies and chocolates, canned goods, and cookies. I bought her cookbook and chatted with her for a few minutes. I was reading her book later at the campground and in it was her story about how she had contracted polio as a child and that is why she is in a wheelchair. She said that at that time polio was sweeping through the Amish communities. She was about my Mom's age, but my Mom had the polio vaccine and I had read that while some Amish do take vaccines, there are a good amount that do not. The entire way of life is just very interesting to me... however, you will not see me getting up at 4am to start the wash and get it hung out on the line, head to the garden, and then back in the house to cook a large breakfast for the family. Those women WORK!
I also bought a loaf of homemade bread. I could have been just as happy smelling the inside of the bag! It was delicious! Between all of us, we ate a slice of buttered bread at the next two dinners and one breakfast. Yep, we pounded a loaf of bread in two days!
Such a great weekend, but back home on Monday and back to our regular schedule. This week we're baking for a baby shower! Do you know anyone that grumbles about attending showers? I love showers, the glimpse you get at the baby's room, the little outfits, and what would a shower be without the treats?! Pink, white, and gray cookies to grace the dessert table at a shower for a little lady. Happy Shower Day!
